About Me
I was a musician before I was a maker. I began playing the cello at the age of 5, and went on to study music performance at the University of Leeds and the Conservatorio E.F di Musica Dall’Abaco in Verona, Italy. I then completed a three-year course at Newark School of Violin Making.
Whilst at Newark, I studied many aspects of violin making, such as the history of the violin, its most famous and celebrated makers, the modern demands on an instrument largely unchanged for 300 years, and modern, minimally invasive repair and restoration techniques.
During this time, I decided to focus purely on the cello. My classical training has given me a critical ear, but also an understanding of how a modern cello player’s needs differ from those of other musicians.
I also regularly travel all over the UK to study, and take inspiration from some of the finest examples of Italian, French, German, and English violinmaking of the last 400 years.
I’m happy to work to a commission, or to bring you an instrument for trial if I have one available.
